Our story so far…
Hi there! We’re Michelle, Tyler, and Mariah Savage -- the family trio behind Savage Goods! When people meet us, they often ask who went to culinary school, or who has the business degree. But, the truth is, we didn’t originally set out to open a cafe. It all started as a way to connect with our community and to care for people through food. It was a winding road that brought us here, and one we are very grateful to have traveled.
It all started in October 2013 when, just for fun, we launched a Farmer’s Market stand at the Downtown El Paso Artist & Farmer’s Market. For our first market, we baked through the night in our tiny apartment, set up on a borrowed folding table, and waited. We had no idea what to expect, but Savage Goods was a hit! From that weekend on, we began to grow. Each week we baked more items and tried new recipes, many of which we still serve at the cafe today.
After two years of operating Savage Goods solely as a home bakery, we began dreaming of a brick-and-mortar. While we loved being part of the market, we were drawn to the idea of creating a "third place" -- a place that is not home or work, but a third kind of place, where people gather together in a welcoming, neighborhood atmosphere. We knew delicious food would be a key component, but we were excited to also integrate our passion for coffee, beer and wine, and hosting into a place where people would feel well-fed and well-loved.
Over the next two years, we did a ton of research, developed a business plan, assembled a team of advisors, redesigned our brand, tested recipes, and continued baking for the Farmer's Market. Then, in the summer of 2017, things really kicked into gear. We had been looking high and low for a neighborhood location that would embody our vision, and after many months of searching, we found the former Jimmy's Grocery. Once a neighborhood institution, Jimmy's is an icon in the Sunset Heights neighborhood. We fell in love with the space and began buildout a few months later. With the help of an incredible group of family and friends, we built the cafe from the ground up, bringing the cafe we’d dreamed about to life.
At the same time, we were working hard to raise our startup capital. We wanted to include the community in creating this place, so we launched a Kickstarter campaign, asking El Paso to take a leap with us, and to be part of making Savage Goods a reality. The community responded with overwhelming support, raising over $30,000 in just 30 days. We believe that this support and involvement is part of what makes Savage Goods so special - it bears the fingerprints of the El Paso community and is shaped every day by our amazing team and the customers who have made it their own.
We opened our doors on December 26, 2017, and it's been a whirlwind ever since. Since opening our Farmer’s Market stand in 2013, we have been humbled and energized by the community’s love and support. We are so proud of what Savage Goods has become, and excited for it to continue to grow and evolve along with our team, our customers, and this beautiful neighborhood. The best is yet to come!
